I don�t know if you can really say that Papers, Please is a fun game there is a great feeling of tension throughout, and yet also of monotony. Even the genre of the game is rather hard to pin down ultimately, the game boils down to trying to find inconsistencies in the papers, making it a puzzle game of sorts, but it somehow lends checking people�s paperwork an air of great gravity and tension, even if the actual activity itself is rather boring. You are an immigration officer, charged with determining who to let into the fictional Eastern European communist country of Arstotzka. Papers, Please is a very strange and difficult to rate game. If you play this to kill time on the iPad for example then sure, it's worth an hour or two here and there, but I don't think it's worthy of the hype it seems to have gotten. In comparison to the decisions and consequences in something like 'This War of Mine', this game just felt a bit hollow. For example, you have the choice of turning away a man who is reportedly going to be running a brothel of some sort, but the outcome of your decision, at least in my run through, was never even hinted at. The main issue though to me was the lack of emotional impact I experienced from the game overall, but mostly when confronted with certain morality-based choices that you're forced to make. There are unique encounters sprinkled throughout the game days but for the most part the gameplay quickly becomes tedious. While I did enjoy the challenge of trying to wade through increasing amounts of documents and information, all the while attempting to do so at a reasonable speed so as to earn enough money to look after your family (and thus continue on to the next day), after the few hours I've put into the game I'm just not incetivised to start over again and get another ending. I think I fell victim once again to the 'overwhelmingly positive' review scores. Personally, I found it to be on the tiring side but that's up to personal preference. The minute to minute task of checking papers becomes both entrancing and tiring, depending on how long you've been playing. From characters, to descriptions (sick sideburns) as well as the overall presentation I didn’t find myself crushed by despair. You might think this makes for a grim experience but there’s a surprising amount of humour to cushion it. Do you let a couple through at a cost to yourself? Do you blindly follow through the requirements of the state, even if you find them distasteful? These questions arise naturally and the game doesn’t damn or condone your choices, one way or another. This is undercut by the quirky characters which shine a light of humanity into the dull life of an inspector and submerge the experience in questions of morality. It’s very easy to become part of the cold bureaucracy and stamp away denials, especially since your family depends on you. The gameplay intermingles with the story in a sublime way. Overall, this game has just about everything.
Just about everyone should give this title a try since I wasn’t very enthused about playing it but still ended up enjoying it. It might be because you have to retread through the missions occasionally and I'm not a big fan of repetition.
